For decades, the Custom Installation industry has organized audio around rooms.
The theater. The media room. The distributed-audio zone. The patio. The equipment rack.
But people do not experience music as a collection of rooms.
They listen while working, cooking, studying, producing music, collecting records, entertaining friends, wearing headphones, moving through the house, and on through the rest of their day.
Gaming, television, movies, and other media naturally join that same audio environment.
A desk can be a personal listening room, a DAW workstation, a headphone reference system, and a compact media system.
A turntable can serve one intimate listening area or become a source for the entire home. A mix leaving a DAW can move into studio monitors, headphones, architectural speakers, outdoor zones, or the main HiFi system.
A family member or guest can pair a phone and contribute music without joining the network behind the wall.
And nobody should need an expensive proprietary control system simply to choose a source and press play.
The network becomes the distribution system. The sources people already use become the control system.
Have network, will travel.
The Living Music Network is not built around one mandatory source or one centralized interface. It accepts music from the ways people already listen, collect, create, and share it.
The curated library, streaming services, discovery, and high-quality radio, including commercial-free stations from around the world.
The artifact, artwork, deliberate choice, and physical ritual of the album.
Creation, recording, reference listening, and a bidirectional path between studio and home.
The spontaneous, social entrance for family members and guests.
Dante routes every source. AES67 allows compatible network-audio products beyond the native Dante ecosystem to participate.
The sources remain familiar.
The network simply allows the music to travel.
Roon chooses the music. Dante takes it from there.
Roon brings together personal music files, streaming services, credits, metadata, discovery, playlists, radio, DSP, and everyday control.
The Munich M1T v2 is the home’s dedicated Roon endpoint. It receives the selected music and delivers it through AES/EBU to the Dante interface. From there, Dante takes over.
A dedicated Bonn switch provides a deliberate local connection for the Roon Server, Munich, Dante interface, and related source equipment without separating them from the broader network.
The source edge is quieted, not disconnected.
Access and attachment are not the same thing.
This episode owes an unmistakable debt to Rick Beato.
Beato has spoken compellingly about the way streaming’s endless abundance can diminish the perceived value of music. Not the quality of the art itself, but the attention, commitment, and context we once brought to it.
His commentary inspired the image used here: streaming as a kitchen faucet, delivering an endless flow of music the instant we turn it on.
An artist’s entire catalog becomes a glass drawn from that stream. A few songs may provide only a few drops before we pour out the rest of the glass and move on.
There was a time when an album felt more like an important book. We searched for it, spent money on it, carried it home, studied the artwork, read the liner notes and credits, learned the sequence, and lived with it long enough for unfamiliar songs to become indispensable.
We shared it with friends, made mixtapes that have since become playlists, and cherished it.
The record occupied physical space. It also occupied emotional space.
My first copy of Kind of Blue arrived from Columbia House when I was twelve and had just begun taking trumpet lessons. It probably was not a perfect pressing, but that did not matter. It felt as though I had discovered something entirely new.
That record opened a door to Miles, Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, and a much larger world of music.
Decades later, I found myself standing in the front room of my brother Vince Wilburn Jr.’s home in Southern California.
The room contained Miles Davis’s personal music system, which he had left to Vince. It included vintage European ReVox electronics and four large, floor-standing, full-range loudspeakers, one in each corner.
I had just installed and adjusted a new Pro-Ject Experience 2 turntable so Vince could hear several Japanese LP reissues he had recently received.
But the system was only part of what filled that room.
One of Miles’s trumpets stood on a stand about ten feet from me. Several of his Grammys rested on his Steinway only a few feet away, beside a pair of signed red boxing gloves. His original paintings hung on the walls around us.
The room was already full of Miles before the needle dropped.
I placed a fresh Japanese pressing of Kind of Blue on the turntable and cued up “So What.”
It felt less as though a recording had started and more as though the room had remembered him.
I closed my eyes and went deeply into the music. Coltrane arrived. Then Cannonball, soaring and diving before the music returned to Evans and slowly faded away.
For a few minutes, the distance between the artist, the record, the equipment, the room, memory, and presence seemed to disappear.
The music made Miles present.
That is what a deeply encountered album can do.
Streaming has given us astonishing access to nearly everything, but access and attachment are not the same thing. When music becomes frictionless, limitless, and nearly disposable, it becomes easier to hear and easier to overlook.
The answer is not to reject streaming or manufacture artificial scarcity. It is to build systems that give music somewhere to land.
A room. A shared moment. A memory.
The network should make music easier to reach without making it easier to overlook.
Vinyl keeps the ritual and releases the music.
Vinyl brings the artifact, the artwork, the deliberate choice, the ritual, and the experience of hearing an album as a complete work.
The phono preamplifier prepares the turntable’s signal to enter the network. Once converted into network audio, the record can be heard through the primary HiFi system, a desktop system, headphones, studio monitors, architectural speakers, the kitchen, the patio, or another listening room.
The ritual remains local. The music does not have to remain trapped there.
The ritual stays with the record. The music can travel through the house.
The DAW joins the home.
A Digital Audio Workstation is not merely a production tool. It is also a serious listening system.
Through Dante Virtual Soundcard or a Dante-enabled interface, the DAW can send a stereo mix, live instruments, microphones, reference tracks, recorded vinyl, or a work in progress into the network. It can also receive audio from the network.
A Roon selection can play through studio monitors. A record can be captured for editing or preservation. A mix can be auditioned through the main HiFi system, headphones, or speakers in another room.
The creator and the listener no longer occupy separate audio worlds.
Bluetooth is the open door.
A family member or guest can pair a phone directly with a Dante-enabled Bluetooth wall plate and contribute music without joining the network behind the wall.
They pair the phone and press play.
Bluetooth is not the reference source. That is not its purpose.

The television joins without taking over the story.
Television, gaming, concerts, movies, and other media can enter the Living Music Network through eARC and an appropriate Dante interface.
The television continues to behave like a television. Its audio simply gains access to the same better loudspeakers, headphones, and listening spaces as the music sources.
Dante routes it. AES67 keeps it open.
Dante is the practical routing fabric of the Living Music Network. It connects sources to destinations, supports persistent routes, manages clock relationships, and allows the system to expand without rebuilding its foundation.
Dante Controller belongs primarily to the integrator. The listener continues to use each source naturally.
Open Roon. Put on a record. Press play in the DAW. Pair a phone. Turn on the television.
The professional work happens behind the system so the human experience can remain in front of it.
AES67 provides an interoperability path for compatible products beyond the native Dante ecosystem. For the system presented here, the chosen operating target is uncompressed 24-bit/96 kHz PCM wherever every participating device supports it.
That is a design standard for this system, not a magical ingredient. It does not transform Bluetooth into Hi-Res or create information that was not present in the source.

The listening room now fits into daily life.
Headphones and desktop systems are not lesser forms of HiFi. For many people, they are where the most listening happens.
A headphone system can provide a complete private listening environment without requiring a dedicated room. A desktop system can combine powered monitors, a DAC, a headphone amplifier, a DAW, gaming, television, vinyl, and access to every permitted source on the network.
It may be where someone works, creates, discovers music, and develops the deepest relationship with sound.
The listening room has been woven into the working day.
An affordable system deserves the same respect for signal path, acoustics, reliability, ergonomics, and human use as a grand listening room. A Dante network can grow one source and one destination at a time.
Serious listening is arriving through new doors.
Younger listeners do not necessarily recognize the audio industry’s traditional borders. They move naturally among vinyl, streaming, Bluetooth, lossless music, headphones, studio monitors, gaming, DAWs, YouTube, live music, and physical media.
They are not choosing between old audio and new audio. They are assembling personal music identities from everything available.
Many encounter serious audio through creation before they encounter traditional HiFi. They buy an interface, microphone, headphones, powered monitors, and production software. Then they begin asking familiar questions.
Why do these monitors image better? Why is the bass wrong at my desk? Why does the mix sound different in another room? Why does vinyl feel different?
Those are HiFi questions, even when they arrive through a DAW instead of a walnut equipment cabinet.
The HiFi Renaissance will happen in grand listening rooms. It will also happen at desks, inside headphones, beside turntables, through gaming systems, in apartments, and throughout homes connected by professional-quality audio networks.
The complexity belongs to the integrator.
The Living Music Network still requires professional design. The network must be planned. Routes must be established. Clocking, gain structure, permissions, and source behavior must be commissioned correctly.
But none of that means the family needs an expensive centralized control platform merely to listen.
Roon controls the Roon experience. The turntable behaves like a turntable. The DAW behaves like a DAW. The Bluetooth wall plate behaves like Bluetooth. The television behaves like a television.
The complexity belongs to the integrator during design and commissioning. It does not belong to the listener during breakfast.
Music is the product. Control should disappear into the experience.
A broader control system may still make sense when the project includes lighting, shades, climate, security, scheduling, or complex automation. But it should remain an optional layer serving the home. It should never become a tollbooth standing between the listener and the music.

Custom Installation has become exceptionally good at hiding technology. Now it must become equally good at revealing music.
Not only through theaters, architectural speakers, centralized racks, and proprietary control systems, but through a better desk, a headphone station, a turntable corner, a networked DAW, a pair of powered monitors, a Dante-enabled Bluetooth wall plate, a television connected to a real music system, an affordable first system that can grow, and a whole home capable of receiving music from any of them.
The question is no longer: Which room needs audio?
